Confirmed in the Spirit

The Sacrament of Confirmation

"Baptism, the Eucharist, and the sacrament of Confirmation together constitute the 'sacraments of Christian initiation'.... [and] is necessary for the completion of baptismal grace. For 'by the sacrament of Confirmation, [the baptized] are more perfectly bound to the Church and are enriched with a special strength of the Holy Spirit. Hence, they are, as true witnesses of Christ, more strictly obliged to spread and defend the faith by word and deed'" (CCC 1285).

Confirmation at St. Joan of Arc

The Confirmation process is offered in the 8th grade but is open to all parishioners 8th grade through 11th grade. Candidates (or Confirmandi) participate in formation sessions and a retreat prior to their reception of the sacrament. The Bishop confers the sacrament of Confirmation in the spring.

The Cleveland Diocese requires that children have 2-consecutive years (7th and 8th grade years) of religious education preparation to receive Confirmation in 8th grade. If your child has missed these required years, please contact Jeff Botos.

Confirmation FAQ's

  • What are the guidelines for Confirmation Candidates

    1. Being a Baptized Catholic or being received into the Catholic Church after Christian Baptism is required to be confirmed.  We will contact you for a copy of your teens Baptismal Certificate if we do not have one on file.
    2. Participation in ALL Confirmation sessions and Spirit Day Retreat.
    3. Participation in the life of the church community that enables one to become a confirmed full member of the Catholic Church including, but not limited to: weekly Mass, daily prayer, reception of Reconciliation and the Eucharist, religious education in the context of Catholic Day School or PSR.
    4. More fully developing one’s relationship with God.
  • How do I choose my Confirmation Sponsor?

    • At least sixteen years of age, but preferably an adult member of the Church.
    • Fully initiated through the sacraments of Baptism, Eucharist, and Confirmation.
    • If married, in a marriage recognized by the Catholic Church.
    • A practicing Catholic in good standing with the Church.
    • A candidate may have a sponsor that is male or female but cannot be the parent of the candidate.
    • Candidates may wish to choose one of their baptismal godparents to be their Confirmation sponsor, emphasizing the important relationship between the two sacraments.
  • How do I choose my Confirmation Name?

    Basic Guidelines:

The name of an officially canonized saint: Top 250 Catholic Saints

The use of your Baptismal Name, provided it is an officially canonized saint.

There is no one way to choose your Confirmation Saint name. There are patron saints of your likes, your struggles, your birthday, and more!

    Good questions to consider:

    • What are my strengths, interests, talents, hobbies, or passions?
    • What do I feel that God is calling me to do in my life?
    • What sins or temptations plague me most?
    • Is there a saint whom I deeply admire or whose life particularly calls out to me?
    • Is there a saint who seems to have chosen me? (Sometimes, saints even seek us out. Pray! Ask the Lord for help.)
  • Why do I need to choose a Confirmation Name?

The sacrament of Confirmation is often referred to as the "sacrament of evangelization." It is the real spiritual help given through the Holy Spirit and aided by the Communion of Saints in Heaven. For this mission, we need spiritual help. The Saints both give us that help and offer us a personal spiritual role mode.

  • Is EDGE required for 8th grade Confirmation students?

Yes. PSR (EDGE) is also required in addition to Confirmation preparation.
